10Y at 5.29% Is Breaking the Tape — Energy Is the Only Place to Hide

Morning session flipped red fast as the 10Y yield hit 5.29%. Energy is the only green sector, crude is ripping +5%, and my scanner came up empty on the long side.

Mario's take

The 10Y yield printing 5.29% is the story of this session — that's the number that's been quietly breaking tech and health care all morning, and it's why the SPX is struggling to hold the flat line.

On my radar
  • MARA $10.36 — down 5.56%, RVOL only 1.0x. That's a weak short setup. I'm not chasing this — no conviction in the volume, and crypto Fear & Greed is still at 64 (Greed), which argues against piling into crypto shorts mid-session.
  • LEVI $18.77 — down 3.79%, RVOL 1.3x. Catalyst-driven weakness is real but volume isn't there to trust a momentum short into power hour. Watching $18.50 — if it loses that with volume picking up, I'd consider a small position.
Levels I care about
  • SPX $7,720 is the line I'm watching into power hour — below that and I expect a flush toward $7,680.
  • Crude $92.85 ripping +5% is a real catalyst, not noise. $94 is the next resistance level for XLE names.
  • 10Y Yield 5.30% — if we close above this level, tomorrow's open will be ugly for rate-sensitive sectors. REIT and UTIL are already bleeding.
  • Gold $4,100 is the floor I'm defending on my bullion position.
How I'm positioned

Scanner came up empty — zero qualifiers out of 282 tickers. That tells me everything. The long-side setups aren't there, and the short setups don't have the volume to trust. I'm not forcing trades on a tape like this.

I trimmed my SPX exposure by 30% at the open when the 10Y crossed 5.28%. Holding my gold position with a stop at $4,100 — it's barely moving which means it's doing its job as a hedge. My crude-linked names are the only thing green in the book today.

Into power hour, I'm watching for energy continuation and waiting to see if SPX tests $7,720. If it does and volume spikes, I'll add a short hedge. No new day trades until volume confirms a setup — sitting on hands beats a bad fill.
