SPX Holds $7,771 but the 10Y at 5.31% Is the Real Story

Markets closed green across most sectors but the 10-year yield at 5.31% is a flashing warning light. Here's how the day played out, what the scanner flagged, and what I'm positioning for tomorrow.

Mario's take

Green close, but I'm not celebrating. SPX +0.64% to $7,771.89 with Materials and Comms leading looks healthy on the surface — until you notice the 10-year yield sitting at 5.311%. That's a number that breaks things if it holds, and right now it's holding.

On my radar
  • ALEC $2.17 — RVOL 75.6x, float 111M, catalyst-driven. This was the cleanest mover on the scanner today. If it consolidates above $2.00 overnight I'm watching the open hard for a continuation or fade setup.
  • STNE $11.54 — RVOL 5.9x, float 243.2M, up 20.84% on catalyst. Float is too big for my usual playbook but the move was real. Watching $11.00 as the line — break below that and this fills the gap fast.
  • NVAX $12.55 — RVOL 5.7x, float 164.4M, up 20% with no fresh catalyst I can pin. Momentum-only moves like this reverse hard. I'm not long, I'm watching for a short setup below $11.80 tomorrow.
Levels I care about
  • SPX $7,750 is my near-term floor — below that and the +0.64% day becomes noise.
  • 10Y Yield 5.35% is the threshold that rattles equities. We're 4 basis points away and the DXY ticking up to 102.14 isn't helping.
  • Gold $4,169 holding fine. Silver up 1.80% to $61.50 is the stronger signal — metals sniffing out something the equity tape isn't pricing yet.
  • Crude $89.07 down 2.24% while energy equities finished +0.76%. That divergence doesn't last — either crude bounces or energy stocks catch down.
How I'm positioned

Day trades were light today — scanner qualified zero tickers before I manually surfaced ALEC, and by then the spread was too wide for my entry rules. I'll grade myself a B- on discipline: I stayed out of NVAX when the catalyst was thin, which was right, but I was slow reading ALEC's RVOL at the open and missed the first push. Lesson noted.

Longer book: gold and silver positions are sitting well, no changes. Bitcoin at $85,683 dropping while Crypto Fear & Greed is at 70 (Greed) is a disconnect I don't love — that's a sentiment setup for a flush. I trimmed 10% of my BTC position into today's close.

Tomorrow I'm watching ALEC at the open for a defined entry above $2.20, and I want to see where crude opens relative to energy equities. If the 10Y pushes toward 5.35% pre-market, I'm cutting day trade size in half and sitting on my hands until the tape tells me something.
