SPX Flat But the Tape Is Lying to You

SPX is barely red but breadth is ugly. Energy and Tech are masking carnage in Financials and Consumer. Power hour setups are thin.

Live tape — what this brief is about

Live ·· After hours
Mario's take

SPX is down eleven cents on the day and that number is doing a lot of heavy lifting for the bulls. Under the hood, Financials are off 1.08%, Consumer is getting wrecked at -1.37%, and Industrials are dragging. Tech and Energy are the only things keeping the index from rolling over hard. The tape character has shifted — this is not a broad rally, it's a rotation with a bad smell.

On my radar
  • LKQ $18.14 — down 19.27% on catalyst, RVOL only 1.9x which tells me the flush isn't done. I want to see a dead-cat bounce into $19.00–$19.50 and then short the rejection back toward $17.50.
  • SLM $19.81 — off 8.96%, RVOL 1.7x, similar setup. If it can't reclaim $20.50 into power hour I'm watching for continuation to $19.00.
  • OSUR $4.05 — smallest float on the long side at 69M, but RVOL at 1.4x isn't convincing me. Needs to clear $4.25 with volume before I touch it.
Levels I care about
  • SPX $7,620 is where I expect the dam to break — below that and the thin breadth gets exposed fast, next stop $7,575.
  • Gold $4,016 gave back 1.08% with the 10Y yield at 4.997% — the bond market is the story today, not equities.
  • Crude $103 ripping +3.59% is the only clean trend on the tape. Energy is the sector.
How I'm positioned

Fear & Greed at 21 (Extreme Fear) while SPX is essentially flat — that divergence is a warning, not a buy signal. I'm not adding to anything long into this. My gold position is underwater intraday but I'm holding above $3,980; that's my stop. No new day trades until I see a clean setup with RVOL above 3x — the scanner came up empty on qualified names and I'm not forcing it. In power hour I'm watching the LKQ dead-cat for a short entry. Cash is a position today.
