Energy Rips, Consumer Gets Wrecked, Scanner Came Up Empty
SPX closed down 0.46% with breadth ugly under the hood. Energy was the lone winner, crude surged 3.7%, and my scanner flagged zero qualified setups — a rare zero day.
Live tape — what this brief is about
Not a day to force trades. The index dropped 0.46% but the real damage was in Consumer Discretionary (-1.31%) and Industrials (-1.40%) — that's not a rotation, that's a risk-off signal with a commodity overlay on top.
On my radar
- CMPS $15.16 — up 8% on catalyst, RVOL 3.8x, float 134.9M. Too heavy a float for my usual small-cap playbook but I'm watching it pre-market. Need to see a clean hold above $14.75 with continuation volume or I walk.
- INNV $11.01 — 50 SMA bounce with RVOL 4.1x is a setup I respect. $10.60 is my line — below that the bounce thesis is dead.
- SB $8.34 — down 6.66% on catalyst, RVOL 5.1x. If this opens weak tomorrow and can't reclaim $8.60, the short side gets interesting for a flush to $7.90.
Levels I care about
- SPX $7,600 is the floor I need to hold — a clean break and I'm looking at $7,540 next.
- Crude $96.47 ripping 3.7% while Consumer falls apart tells me cost-push pressure is back. $98.50 is the next resistance level and a break there changes my Energy thesis from trade to position.
- Gold $4,443 holding flat while yields pushed to 4.837% on the 10Y is actually constructive — gold is not breaking, it's consolidating. $4,400 is my stop on my bullion position.
How I'm positioned
Scanner went zero-for-347 on qualified setups today. I take that seriously — the tape is not giving clean entries and I'm not going to manufacture them. I graded today a C+: held discipline, didn't overtrade, but crude's move caught me underweight Energy. Gold position is sitting fine with my stop at $4,400. BTC at $78,139 with Crypto Fear & Greed at 66 (Greed) while stock Fear & Greed sits at 40 (Fear) — that divergence is worth watching. Tomorrow I'm setting alerts on INNV at $10.60 and $11.40, and I'll check crude pre-market before touching any Energy names. If SPX can't hold $7,600 in the first 30 minutes, I'm sitting on my hands until noon.
