Tech Holds the Tape but Breadth Is Quietly Breaking Down
SPX is off only 0.38% but the internals are ugly — Consumer, Comms, and Health are getting hit while Tech papers over the damage. AOUT is the monster of the day at RVOL 65.5x.
Live tape — what this brief is about
Tech is doing the heavy lifting and the index headline looks tame, but this is a narrow, unhealthy tape. Five of ten sectors are down over 0.7% and Consumer is the worst offender at -1.33%. That's not a dip — that's rotation out of risk.
On my radar
- AOUT $14.48 — RVOL 65.5x, float 12.5M, up 44.66%. This is the cleanest momentum name on the board today. I want a consolidation flag between $13.80–$14.20 before any long entry — chasing a 44% move midday is how you get chopped up in power hour.
- EPRX $8.40 — RVOL 7.8x, float 65M, up 12%. Softer setup than AOUT but the float is manageable. $8.00 is the line — if it holds into 2pm ET I'm watching for a push toward $9.00.
- ASAN $8.81 — RVOL 3.5x, down 12.69%, tagging the 200 SMA. Short thesis is intact as long as it stays below $9.20. Target is $8.40 on continuation into the close.
Levels I care about
- SPX $7,680 is the level I'm watching — that's where the morning support has clustered. A break below that opens a fast move to $7,640.
- Gold $4,476 going nowhere with DXY soft at 98.88 is a mild concern — I'd expect gold to be pushing $4,510 in this dollar environment. The flatline tells me real-money demand isn't rushing in.
- BTC $78,788 is a disconnect — Crypto Fear & Greed sitting at 71 (Greed) while BTC is down nearly 2% intraday. That divergence usually resolves lower, not higher.
How I'm positioned
I took a half-size long on AOUT at $13.95 when it flagged this morning — I'm up and my stop is now at breakeven. I'm not adding into power hour unless it reclaims $14.60 with conviction. ASAN short is on my screen but I haven't pulled the trigger yet — waiting for a dead-cat bounce toward $9.10 to short into. Sitting mostly in cash on the day-trade book. My SPX hedge through inverse ETFs stays on until we get a clean hold above $7,750. Last hour I'm watching whether AOUT holds its flag or pukes — that will tell me everything about small-cap momentum appetite into the close.
