Materials and Comms Carry the Tape While Tech Sits Out
SPX closed up 0.45% but the internals tell the real story — Tech was flat, REITs bled, and the scanner fired a goose egg on qualified setups. Here's how the day graded out.
Live tape — what this brief is about
Clean close on the index level but this was not a broad bull day — it was a rotation day, and if you were leaning on tech you felt it. SPX at $7,666 is fine, but the composition of that gain matters more than the number.
On my radar
- DSX $3.00 — RVOL 3.2x, float 124.4M, momentum flag. This is the only name from today's scanner worth circling for tomorrow. I want a clean open above $3.05 with volume confirmation before I touch it. Float is manageable but 3.2x RVOL at the close doesn't excite me the way 8x+ pre-market would.
- FRVO $18.33 — down 7.19% on a catalyst, RVOL 1.7x. Not enough volume for me to short into, but if this gaps down tomorrow and RVOL spikes above 3x in the first 15 minutes, I'm watching for a dead-cat fade setup off the open.
Levels I care about
- SPX $7,620 is now the line — that's where I start trimming longs and letting day trades breathe short. Below that I expect a fast move to $7,580.
- Gold $4,432 holding the bid is bullish. I don't add unless it clears $4,460 with conviction.
- Materials +1.78% leading today tells me commodity inflation is back in the conversation — Crude at $90.93 and Natural Gas up 3% in a single session confirms that thesis.
How I'm positioned
Fear & Greed at 34 (Fear) while SPX grinds higher — that's the kind of divergence I respect. The crowd is skeptical, which means the move has more room than it feels like it does. My gold position is sitting well; I'm holding through any dip to $4,400 with no add until the $4,460 breakout. Bitcoin at $77,259 with Crypto Fear & Greed at 63 (Greed) is a mild concern — I trimmed 10% of my BTC exposure today because that sentiment gap feels stretched near-term. Day trades were sized at half normal risk all session because the scanner literally zeroed out qualified setups — zero. That's the right call in hindsight. Tomorrow I'm watching the open in Materials names and DSX specifically for a momentum continuation setup above $3.05.
